2018 First Responders Appreciation Dinner

Please join us this Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the historic Cane Ridge Community Center, 6043 Cane Ridge Road, for our monthly potluck gathering. Please bring extra extra side dishes to help feed our extra guests. Our June meeting is our First Responders Appreciation dinner. Since our appreciation event in 2017, we’ve had two very public, significant reminders of how much we rely upon our public service employees.

On September 24th, 2017, a gunman opened fire at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ just off Murfreesboro Road. One person was killed and several others suffered gunshot wounds. Police, Fire, EMT and others responded to the scene and took the wounded suspect into custody and transported him and six others with varying degrees of gunshot wounds to area hospitals.

A little over seven months later, on April 22nd, another gunman opened fire at the Waffle House. He has been charged for murdering four young people and wounding two others. The hunt for this suspect lasted into the next day, when the suspect was taken into custody. This search impacted schools, neighborhoods, major roadways, and varying terrain.

These two events involved hundreds of Metro employees and thousands of hours of work. In each instance, our public servants drove towards scenes of unfolding chaos and danger. While looking for the Waffle House suspect, police searched woods and thickets full of brambles, ticks, and unfinished houses that would lend themselves to ambushes, knowing that the suspect had been armed with a high powered rifle; responding medical personnel provided assistance to multiple victims while that suspect was still on the loose. Many of these same first responders contributed back to the victims and their families after the incidents in various ways.

Every day, 365 days per year, each hour -whether 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 a.m. – every moment that you are asleep in your bed, driving to work, eating a meal, or watching children play, there are fine men and women here at Metro working to keep our communities safe and to provide assistance when our safety has been impacted. Let’s tell them “Thank you” this Monday.
